Javier Jarquin interview

After being a rising star in New Zealand, Javier  Jarquin decided to move to London to start his career from scratch. He has performed twice for London Calling Comedy and is one of the favorites amongst our audiences... Prior to his first visit to Slovenia Javier talked to London Calling about hurdles in his career, the UK comedy circuit and about our London Calling Club.

Q: "So you were not happy with your previous non – comedy life – how and when did you decide you are going to be a comedian?"

A:  "Well I was doing improv on the side, and I have been performing on the side, but I had a software engineering job that I hated so much…"

Q: "So the message is – believe in yourself?"
A: "I believe so, and you’ve absolutely got to, and it is really hard sometimes, because you have a bad gig, and you are on the way home, and it is a very long ride"

Q: Why comedians like to expose themselves, what drives them to do what they do?
A: "Yeah, why are comedians doing this? I don’t know, every comedian is so  different , they all have got different reasons for being on stage, a lot of them kind a fell into it…but some people love it , they need to do it – it is a rush…"

Q: "Where this rush comes from. How do you feel when you make people laugh?"
A: "You feel great! I guess a part of that rush comes from the fact that there was a time when stand up comedy was the last bastion of the free speech..."

Q: "The best and the worst moments of your career so far?"
A:  "Best moments? There were so many…sometimes at the smallest gigs you walk away feeling great, the people would come up to you afterwards for a chat, but sometimes...

Q: "We are bringing London Calling to Slovenia for the first time, trying to recreate the typical London stand up club experience. Can you explain how  the classic line up in London looks like?"
A: "Your best act has to be you closing act, the headline act. Then you have a strong act who is opening, because the first act has to get the audience trust..."

Q: "How are you coping with the such strong competition in the UK.  How does your working week look like?"
A: "When they say there is lot comedians in the UK – think about every pigeon in the UK, there is probably a comedian that goes with that pigeon"

Q: "It is hard work, you spend lot of time on the road.."
A: "I do a mix of in-London and outside-of-London gigs...I thhink that once I have even gone up to about 5 hours"

Q: It seems that you are travelling more and more, does this mean you have less time to write new material?"

A: " set  aside a little bit of time each day to try and write some stuff…

Q: "What are your favourite clubs in and out of London?"
A: "In London..The Comedy Cafe is great, it is beautifully set up…then Downstairs at the King’s Head…

Q: "You moved from New Zealand, where you were well known, to the UK.  What’s it been like gigging across the UK and now in Europe as an unknown comedian? Have you ever regretted moving?"
A: "I’ve been on a real rollercoaster of emotion since I got to the UK. I’ve never felt as happy as I’ve been over here, or as lonely as I have been over here...”
